British Widow Faces Deportation From Sweden Over Missed Brexit Deadline

Thu, Sep 10, 2026(1h ago)World

Joyce Thomas, a 78-year-old retired nurse, is currently fighting to stay in Sweden, the country she has called home for over 22 years. Despite being deeply rooted in her community with a son, grandchildren, and the resting place of her late husband, Thomas is facing potential deportation due to a missed administrative deadline following Brexit. Like many British citizens, she was required to apply for a new residency status by the end of 2021 to remain under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. Thomas claims she and her husband were simply unaware of the requirement until it was too late, and although she filed an application in 2023, Swedish authorities rejected it, citing that a lack of knowledge did not constitute a valid reason for the delay.

The situation has sparked significant debate, highlighting the rigid consequences of Sweden’s "constitutive" residency system. Thomas is far from alone in this struggle, as thousands of UK nationals have faced similar orders to leave since Brexit. While a last-minute legal appeal has temporarily halted her removal, the future remains agonizingly uncertain for the widow, who only wishes to remain in the country she has long considered her home. Her case has drawn attention from both Swedish and British officials, raising critical questions about whether long-term residents should be forced out over bureaucratic oversights that have upended the lives of so many.
