Cilia Flores Requests House Arrest Due to Failing Health

Fri, Sep 11, 2026(2h ago)World

Cilia Flores, the wife of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, is seeking a transition from federal detention to house arrest in the United States, citing urgent medical concerns. Currently held in a Brooklyn facility while awaiting trial on federal drug trafficking charges, the 69-year-old is reportedly suffering from significant heart issues. Her legal team argues that her current environment is insufficient for the specialized care she requires, suggesting that a move to home confinement—monitored by 24-hour armed guards and electronic tracking—would be a more appropriate setting for her to undergo necessary procedures like a coronary angiogram.

Her attorney, Mark Donnelly, emphasized that Flores’s health has deteriorated rapidly since her capture by U.S. forces in Caracas this past January. He noted that prior to her arrest, she did not require long-term medication or intensive treatment. Both Flores and her husband, who was also apprehended on January 3, maintain their innocence regarding the allegations of smuggling large quantities of cocaine into the U.S. While the prosecution proceeds, Maduro continues to contest the legal legitimacy of the case, famously asserting in court that he is a "prisoner of war."
