European Media Outlets Targeted by Coordinated Bomb Threats
Major newsrooms across Europe, including Ireland’s RTE, Bulgaria’s Nova TV, and Sky, were forced to grapple with security alerts on Friday after receiving identical bomb threats. The emails, signed by an individual identifying as "Mikhail Andropov," claimed that explosives had been planted within the buildings and warned that a wider campaign against Western transport infrastructure was underway. While these evacuations ultimately proved to be false alarms, they coincide with an unsettling surge in hoax threats that have disrupted dozens of flights across the continent throughout the week, often requiring emergency diversions and military jet escorts.
Security analysts and European officials are increasingly viewing these incidents as part of a broader "hybrid" campaign designed to sow fear and destabilize society. While no definitive link has been proven between the specific senders and any state actor, many leaders believe the pattern fits the profile of psychological warfare tactics intended to punish nations for their support of Ukraine. EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen emphasized that Europe is currently facing a persistent array of "grey zone" operations—ranging from infrastructure sabotage to cyber interference—aimed at eroding public trust. Although Moscow has denied any involvement, the frequency and nature of these threats have left authorities on high alert as they navigate a volatile security environment.
