Kerala High Court Grants Bail to Four Students in Fatal Mini Cooper Crash
The Kerala High Court has granted bail to Suhail Sajeev, the son of a Dubai boutique owner, and his three companions following their involvement in a tragic accident that claimed the lives of three individuals. The incident, which took place last month, involved a Mini Cooper colliding with a scooter, resulting in the immediate deaths of its three passengers. While the court ruled in favor of the four 19-year-old students, citing their youth and time already served in custody, it has ordered a 10-day delay in Sajeevâs release. Earlier attempts to secure bail had been denied by lower courts, largely due to findings that Sajeevâs blood alcohol levels were five times the legal limit at the time of the crash.
During the proceedings, the defense emphasized the academic toll the judicial custody has taken on the four men, while prosecutors voiced strong objections, fearing that Sajeevâs influential family background might lead to evidence tampering or witness intimidation. Prosecutors also highlighted that most of the accused had initially fled the scene of the accident. Despite these concerns and allegations that Sajeev showed little regard for the law, the High Court determined that the core investigative workâincluding evidence regarding speeding and intoxicationâwas sufficiently complete. Consequently, the court ruled that the detention was no longer necessary, though the case remains a subject of intense public concern regarding road safety and accountability.
