UAE Introduces Landmark Six-Month Schizophrenia Treatment

Sun, Jul 26, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Emirates Health Services (EHS) has reached a major milestone in mental healthcare by introducing a groundbreaking, long-acting schizophrenia treatment at Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital. This new therapy, known as BYANNLI, requires administration just once every six months, marking the first time a government facility in the UAE has provided such an option. By significantly reducing the frequency of dosing, officials aim to bolster treatment adherence and provide a more sustainable, manageable path for patients, effectively easing the emotional and logistical burden on both families and caregivers.

Medical experts within the EHS emphasize that maintaining consistent medication schedules is often the most difficult hurdle in managing chronic mental health disorders like schizophrenia. By shifting toward these extended-interval treatments, the healthcare sector is better positioned to prevent relapses and promote long-term psychological stability. Data from Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital already underscores the effectiveness of this approach, citing a readmission rate of less than one percent and a 93 percent success rate in both treatment adherence and symptom improvement, all of which supports the UAE's broader commitment to the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031.
