New Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Boosts Dubai’s Traffic Flow
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially inaugurated the new 1.65km Al Khaleej Street Tunnel, a major addition to the city's infrastructure that connects the Infinity Bridge ramp to the intersection of Al Khaleej and Al Wuheida streets. Boasting three lanes in each direction, this impressive structure is designed to accommodate 12,000 vehicles every hour, significantly easing travel to bustling areas like Deira, Al Mamzar, and the Dubai Islands. Beyond just traffic management, the tunnel features a stunning, expansive mosaic mural by Emirati artist Maryam Al Hathboor, which utilizes 36 million individual pieces to depict the city’s iconic skyline.
This development serves as a vital component of the ambitious 13km Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which aims to slash travel times across key arterial roads from over an hour down to just 16 minutes by 2030. RTA officials noted that the project—which involved over 11 million injury-free work hours—also focuses on sustainability, with 77 percent of excavated materials being recycled for future use. Looking ahead, the RTA continues to push forward with additional improvements, including the construction of a massive new bridge across Dubai Creek and the conversion of several roundabouts into signalized intersections to ensure a smoother, more efficient commute for over a million residents and visitors.
