DK Shivakumar Takes Oath as Karnataka’s 18th Chief Minister
D.K. Shivakumar officially stepped into the role of Karnataka’s 18th Chief Minister on Wednesday, marking a pivotal shift in the state's political leadership. The ceremony, held at the Glass House in the Lok Bhavan to avoid city-wide traffic disruptions, was attended by key Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Alongside Shivakumar, G. Parameshwar was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister, leading a new cabinet that includes 13 ministers, among them familiar faces like Priyank Kharge and Yathindra Siddaramaiah. This transition follows the resignation of former CM Siddaramaiah, effectively concluding a high-profile period of internal political maneuvering.
As he assumes office, Shivakumar faces a daunting agenda, characterized by pressing rural and urban crises. He inherits a state budget heavily burdened by significant welfare commitments, while also contending with persistent agricultural distress, including crop losses and drought. Furthermore, the new administration is locked in complex inter-state disputes, most notably concerning the Cauvery and Mekedatu water sharing agreements. With vocal opposition from neighboring Tamil Nadu and ongoing legal pressures, Shivakumar has acknowledged the difficulty of the path ahead, emphasizing that his priority will be to meet public expectations while steering Karnataka through these multifaceted fiscal and environmental challenges.
