Gold Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Ahmedabad Airport
Customs officials at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad recently uncovered a sophisticated smuggling attempt aboard an IndiGo flight arriving from Dubai. Upon inspecting the aircraft, authorities discovered two black-taped pouches hidden inside a speaker unit located in the front lavatory. The concealed haul consisted of 24 gold biscuits, weighing nearly 2.8 kilograms and boasting a 24-carat purity. With an estimated market value of Rs 4.26 crore, the seizure highlights the increasingly creative methods traffickers are using to bypass border security.
Since no passenger stepped forward to claim the contraband, the gold has been officially seized as unclaimed property under the Customs Act, 1962. This incident reflects the ongoing challenge Indian authorities face in managing the country's massive appetite for gold. Despite fluctuating prices and strict regulations, the persistent demand for the precious metal continues to drive illicit activity. Customs officials remain on high alert, reinforcing their vigilance to intercept such smuggling attempts and ensure regulatory compliance at major transit hubs.
