US Official Celebrates Iran’s World Cup Exit With ‘Happy Dance’
US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin recently sparked controversy after publicly expressing his relief over Iran’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup. During a security briefing in Washington, Mullin admitted to performing a "happy dance" upon learning the Iranian squad would be heading home. He cited significant logistical challenges, claiming that the Iranian delegation was the most difficult team to manage during the tournament. Throughout the event, the US government had enforced strict travel limitations on the team, including moving their training base from Arizona to Tijuana and requiring them to depart US soil immediately following each match.
The tension surrounding the team’s presence was further highlighted by accusations from Mullin that a large portion of the Iranian delegation had ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—a claim the Iranian football federation has vehemently denied. In response, Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, voiced his frustration, labeling the treatment of his players as "very unfair" and urging FIFA to take action against the host nation’s conduct. Despite the political friction, the Iranian team concluded their tournament stay by leaving poignant notes in their locker rooms, emphasizing that while they may not have advanced in the standings, they chose to depart with their dignity and pride intact.
