India’s "Cockroach" Protesters Demand Freedom for Detained Students

Tue, Jul 28, 2026(45d ago)World

The youth-led "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP) is escalating pressure on the Indian government, demanding the immediate release of students arrested during recent nationwide demonstrations. Triggered by widespread irregularities and leaks in competitive examinations, the movement recently celebrated a major victory with the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. However, the group warns that the government has failed to honor its previous promises to refrain from punitive actions, alleging that numerous protesters remain in custody across states like Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar.

The movement, which has gained significant traction on social media, faced intense police crackdowns in New Delhi, where authorities resorted to tear gas and batons to disperse crowds. Reports of police brutality, including a disturbing incident in Bihar involving an assault rifle, have drawn sharp condemnation, with the Chief Justice of India calling for an independent investigation into the force used against demonstrators. As opposition leaders decry these tactics as an assault on democracy, the government has introduced new legislation to curb exam paper leaks, even as the CJP vows to continue its campaign if their detained peers are not set free.
