Indian Court Mandates Removal of Documentary Linking Modi and Adani
An Indian High Court has issued an interim order requiring major social media platforms, including YouTube, X, and Meta, to remove a controversial documentary titled "The Friendship Files." The film, produced by Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia, alleges a history of cronyism between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire Gautam Adani. Adani Enterprises initiated the legal challenge, arguing that the documentary is a dramatized narrative filled with false claims rather than a factual report, asserting that the content caused unnecessary alarm among its investors.
While the Adani Group and the Indian government have consistently denied accusations of favoritism, the documentary has sparked significant political debate, with opposition leaders frequently sharing the film to highlight their ongoing concerns. Despite the courtâs order to restrict the content until early 2027, the situation remains fluid, as some political figures have kept the video live on their profiles. Bhatia, who is currently based in the United States and faces a multi-million rupee defamation claim, remains defiant, maintaining that his work has struck a sensitive nerve and that the truth is on his side.
