Jordanian Airstrikes Target Militants in Southern Syria
Jordan recently launched a series of targeted airstrikes in southern Syria, asserting that the mission successfully eliminated over 20 militants linked to Daesh. Government spokesperson Mohammed al-Momani confirmed the operation, noting that the strikes were intended to hit terrorist hideouts identified after a recent deadly attack on a church within Jordanian borders. While Amman maintains that these actions were coordinated with Damascus and specifically avoided civilian-populated areas, the aftermath of the strikes has sparked a diplomatic dispute.
Reports from Syrian authorities initially claimed that seven civilians, including three children and a woman, were killed during the bombardment. In response, the Jordanian government expressed regret over the potential loss of innocent lives and pledged to investigate the matter further with Syrian officials. The situation remains complex, as the Syrian government has publicly stated its "complete reservation" regarding the lack of prior coordination, emphasizing the need for better communication between the two nations when conducting security operations near their shared border.
