Tragedy Strikes Japan: Fatalities Reported at Mall Following Powerful 7.1 Earthquake

Wed, Jul 29, 2026(45d ago)World

A devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Authorities confirmed that multiple people have died at a local shopping mall after parts of the structure collapsed, trapping several others inside. The tremor caused significant damage across the region, triggering fires, destroying infrastructure, and leaving approximately 40,000 households without electricity. In response to the crisis, over 150,000 residents have been advised to evacuate to safety centers as emergency crews scramble to assess the full scale of the destruction.

Transportation and industry have also been severely disrupted, with major highways cracked, rail services halted, and flights grounded at Kumamoto Airport. Major corporations, including TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm, took precautionary measures by evacuating staff from their regional facilities. Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a stern warning, advising residents to remain vigilant against the threat of landslides and potential aftershocks, which are expected to persist in the coming week as recovery efforts continue.
