Tensions Surge as US and Saudi Arabia Strike Iran-Linked Targets in Iraq

Wed, Jul 29, 2026(45d ago)World

In a significant escalation of regional instability, the United States and Saudi Arabia launched coordinated airstrikes against Iran-backed groups operating within Iraq. This military action followed a series of drone attacks targeting Saudi oil infrastructure, which Riyadh and Washington attribute directly to Tehran-supported militias. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has vehemently denied these allegations, labeling the accusations a "major miscalculation" while simultaneously confirming their forces intercepted oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and conducted missile tests aimed at US installations in Jordan.

The strikes have effectively ended a fragile period of de-escalation, triggering immediate economic ripples as oil prices jumped by more than $3 a barrel. While Saudi officials maintain they are not seeking a wider conflict, the situation remains volatile with Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces reporting casualties and significant property damage at their headquarters. As Oman pushes for a diplomatic resolution to secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the ongoing cycle of retaliatory fire continues to cast a long shadow over energy markets and regional security.
