Following a surge of violence between Hindu and Muslim groups in Nepal’s southern plains, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has made an urgent public plea for national harmony. The unrest, which began late Sunday in the Sunsari district near the Indian border, was reportedly triggered by a dispute involving religious flags and loud music during a procession. The situation escalated rapidly as police intervened, resulting in the deaths of two individuals during the initial confrontation. A third fatality was reported on Thursday in the nearby Siraha district, occurring amid ongoing protests despite a government-imposed curfew.

In a rare public address, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of national unity and urged citizens, political leaders, and religious figures to exercise restraint. Seeking to stabilize the region, the government has mandated a curfew across the affected areas and promised a thorough, transparent investigation into the deaths. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that police remain on high alert to protect public property and restore order with minimal force, while the Prime Minister reaffirmed his administration's commitment to holding those responsible for the violence accountable.
