Call of Duty Under Fire for Using Real Itaewon Crowd Crush Footage
Families of the victims of the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush are calling for the immediate removal of real disaster footage featured in the latest "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4." The game, which depicts a fictionalized North Korean invasion of South Korea, utilizes actual video clips of the tragedy—showing paramedics performing CPR and emergency responders managing the scene—to represent war-torn damage. Representative Cho In-young and various civic groups have condemned the inclusion of this footage, labeling it as a deeply insensitive move that disrespects the dignity of the 150-plus victims who lost their lives during the Halloween festivities.
Activision, the game’s publisher, stated that the clips were intended purely to serve the game’s fictional narrative and denied any intent to trivialize the real-world tragedy. However, bereaved families remain unsatisfied, describing the decision to turn a national trauma into entertainment material as "thoughtless" and "highly inappropriate." As the families gather for memorial ceremonies, they are organizing a formal protest and demanding that the developers show basic empathy by editing the game to remove the distressing imagery.
