India Assures Farmers Ahead of US Trade Deal
Union Minister Piyush Goyal has firmly dismissed concerns regarding the upcoming trade pact with the United States, asserting that India will not sacrifice the livelihoods of its farmers or domestic stakeholders. Speaking at an industry event in New Delhi, Goyal expressed confidence that the final agreement will prove to be a significant win for India. He emphasized that the government has maintained a cautious approach throughout the negotiations to ensure that no sensitive economic sectors are undermined, promising that the public will ultimately view the deal as a positive development once the specifics are disclosed.
Despite these assurances, the deal continues to face intense scrutiny from agricultural advocacy groups. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which represents over 100 farm organizations, has voiced sharp criticism, fearing that lower tariffs on American imports—such as maize, walnuts, and apples—will flood the market with subsidized foreign goods and drive down domestic prices. With the government yet to finalize the agreement, farming unions remain skeptical and are planning further protests in November to demand full transparency and the withdrawal of the proposed tariff concessions.
