Tragedy Strikes Broad Peak: Avalanche Claims Lives of Two Climbers

Fri, Jul 31, 2026(2h ago)World

A devastating avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak has resulted in the deaths of Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy and Nepali guide Pur Bahadur Gurung, also known as "Yukta." The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the tragedy occurred while the duo was part of a larger expedition navigating the treacherous Karakoram range. As the mountaineering community mourns the loss of Al Harthy, a trailblazer who inspired many across the Arab world, rescue teams are working tirelessly in the high-altitude environment. Military helicopters and ground units utilizing GPS tracking have been deployed to locate eight other climbers who remain missing following the incident.

Among those reported missing is the renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who had been documenting his attempt to become the first person to summit all 14 of the world’s "super peaks" twice without supplemental oxygen. Just days before the avalanche, Purja shared a poignant message on social media expressing his deep respect for the mountain and the challenges it presents. Broad Peak, standing at 8,047 meters, is notoriously difficult and technically demanding, making current rescue efforts exceptionally complex. As Chinese officials coordinate with Pakistani authorities to offer support, the global climbing community waits anxiously for further updates on the search operations.
