Meta India Executive Faces Police Case Over Offensive Modi Content

Fri, Jul 31, 2026(45d ago)World

Authorities in Hyderabad have initiated legal action against the head of Meta India following the circulation of videos on Facebook that allegedly portrayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an abusive light. A senior official from the city's cyber crime unit, V. Aravind Babu, confirmed that a case has been registered and stated that police are currently drafting a formal notice to be sent to Meta Platforms. As of Friday, the company had not issued a public statement regarding the situation.

This development underscores the growing friction between the social media giant and the Indian government regarding the moderation of political content. The incident follows a recent controversy where Meta briefly restricted a post by the Prime Minister concerning student-led protests, an action the company later attributed to an inadvertent error. With India serving as Facebook’s largest user base, these recurring tensions highlight the complex challenges Meta faces while navigating the country's stringent IT regulations and the intense political climate surrounding the nation's leadership.
