Tragedy Strikes Broad Peak: Nirmal Purja and Expedition Team Perish in Avalanche

Sat, Aug 1, 2026(45d ago)World

The mountaineering world is in mourning following the confirmation that renowned climber Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja and his entire ten-member expedition team have perished in a catastrophic avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak. The disaster occurred at an altitude of approximately 6,600 meters last Thursday. According to authorities and the Nimsdai Foundation, the team—which included members from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the United States, and China—was struck by the avalanche, with tracking data suggesting they were swept hundreds of meters down the mountainside.

Nirmal Purja, a global icon who famously summited all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in record-breaking time, leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled courage and inspiration. Beyond his legendary climbing feats, such as the historic winter ascent of K2, he was a visionary leader who motivated millions to push past their perceived limitations. As search and rescue operations conclude under heartbreaking circumstances, the climbing community reflects on the profound loss of Purja, his dedicated team members, and the indelible mark they left on the sport.
