Dakar Rally Shifts to Portugal and Morocco for 2027
In a significant shake-up for the endurance racing world, organizers have confirmed that the 2027 Dakar Rally will move away from Saudi Arabia to be hosted by Portugal and Morocco. This decision follows escalating security concerns in the region, specifically linked to intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure. The upcoming 49th edition of the historic race will kick off with a prologue and opening stage in Portugal before embarking on a challenging 8,000km journey through the diverse terrains of Morocco. This move marks the rally’s first return to the African continent since 2007, a homecoming that race director David Castera describes as a true test of endurance despite the logistical challenges of changing the venue on short notice.
The relocation of the Dakar Rally is part of a broader trend of sporting events being disrupted by the ongoing instability in the Middle East. With multiple high-profile competitions, including various Formula One Grands Prix and WTA events, facing cancellation or rescheduling, the organizers are prioritizing the safety of participants and staff. While the Dakar Rally is slated to return to Saudi Arabia for its milestone 50th edition in 2028, the current geopolitical climate has forced a temporary shift in the rally's route. Competitors are now preparing for an expansive and technically demanding course that promises to explore the unique landscapes of Morocco from end to end, maintaining the event's reputation as the world's most grueling rally.
