Shakib Al Hasan's Ancestral Home Attacked Following Hasina’s Virtual Appearance

Thu, Aug 6, 2026(45d ago)World

The ancestral residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and ex-Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan was targeted by an angry mob on Wednesday in Magura. Attackers smashed windows and threw petrol bombs at the property, igniting a fire on the upper floor. Fortunately, the house was empty at the time, and no casualties were reported. The violence erupted shortly after Shakib participated in a virtual media event featuring ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in New Delhi since fleeing the country in 2024.

This incident highlights the ongoing volatility surrounding Hasina’s political circle following the student-led uprising that forced her out of power. During the virtual event, which marked the second anniversary of her ouster, Hasina publicly vowed to return to Bangladesh despite facing a death sentence handed down by a war crimes tribunal for her role in the 2024 crackdown. Meanwhile, Shakib, who remains abroad, is currently facing various legal probes related to allegations of murder and financial misconduct. The Bangladeshi foreign ministry has since criticized Hasina’s public address, labeling it a challenge to the nation's sovereignty and warning that such platforms could strain diplomatic ties between Dhaka and New Delhi.
