Six Dead as Typhoon Maymay Triggers Landslides and Floods in Northern Philippines

Thu, Aug 6, 2026(1h ago)World

A powerful typhoon known as Maymay has left a trail of destruction across the northern Philippines, resulting in the tragic deaths of six individuals. According to the Philippine National Police, the fatalities were primarily caused by a series of devastating landslides and drowning incidents occurring between Wednesday and Thursday. Among the victims were two young adults in Rizal Province, two restaurant workers in Benguet, and two others who lost their lives to flooding in La Union and Pangasinan. In response to the widespread destruction, thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes as the storm prompted the suspension of government offices and schools across Luzon.

While the storm has since weakened into a tropical depression after moving through the Cordillera Mountain Range, its impact remains significant. Beyond the landslides, the typhoon exacerbated the southwest monsoon, leading to severe flooding in the Mindanao region and forcing the town of Buluan into a state of calamity. On a positive note, the heavy rainfall has provided much-needed relief to several of the country’s major dams, including the Angat Dam, which supplies the vast majority of water to Metro Manila. Authorities continue to conduct retrieval operations in affected areas as the nation begins the difficult process of recovery.
