Trump Announces Plan to Secure Majority Control of Venezuelan Oil Reserves

Sat, Aug 29, 2026(2h ago)World

In a significant policy shift, the Trump administration has announced a deal to gain majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves. By partnering with private enterprises, the administration aims to revitalize Venezuela’s struggling energy sector, which has been hampered for years by mismanagement and international sanctions. U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have framed this arrangement as a mutually beneficial strategy that promises to bring roughly $100 billion in private investment to Venezuela while providing a stable, reliable source of crude to help lower fuel prices for American consumers.

Despite the optimism expressed by the administration and Venezuelan interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, many experts remain skeptical regarding the viability of the plan. The agreement's legal framework remains murky, raising concerns about whether a U.S.-led lease model can comply with the Venezuelan constitution, which traditionally mandates state control over oil assets. Furthermore, analysts point out that Venezuela’s severely degraded infrastructure, grid instability, and ongoing political volatility could make it difficult to rapidly increase production. While the administration views this as a key step toward energy security and economic recovery, it remains to be seen whether the project can overcome long-standing systemic challenges to deliver the promised results.
