Oman Issues Urgent Warning Over Toxic Pufferfish and Seafood Safety

Mon, Sep 14, 2026(1h ago)World

Omani authorities have issued a stark warning to both residents and tourists regarding the dangers of consuming 12 specific species of pufferfish found in local waters. These fish contain tetrodotoxin, a lethal poison that cannot be neutralized by cooking or freezing. Ingestion can lead to severe health complications, including muscle weakness, paralysis, vomiting, and even death. The Food Safety and Quality Centre has strictly advised the public to avoid purchasing or trading these species, emphasizing the importance of sourcing seafood only from reputable, regulated vendors to ensure safety.

Beyond the specific threat of pufferfish, officials are actively managing other public health risks related to the marine environment. This includes avoiding shellfish from areas impacted by red tide algal blooms, steering clear of improperly chilled fish to prevent scombroid poisoning, and respecting seasonal bans on fishing for species like kingfish and shrimp. Additionally, following a recent oil spill near the Al Hallaniyat Islands, authorities are conducting rigorous testing of fish stocks in affected areas. The public is urged to rely solely on official updates from government agencies rather than unverified reports while these environmental and safety monitoring efforts continue.
