The Price of Conflict: US Military Spending in Iran War Hits $38 Billion

Wed, Sep 16, 2026(1h ago)World

According to a recent report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the ongoing military conflict between the United States and Iran has reached a staggering cost of $38 billion as of August 1, 2026. This figure, which aligns closely with previous estimates from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, covers the primary expenses of replacing destroyed equipment, replenishing munitions, and managing rising fuel demands. However, the financial burden is unlikely to stabilize, as the CBO warns that the monthly cost could surge between $2 billion and $3 billion, with potential for even higher expenditures should the violence intensify.

Beyond direct military spending, the report highlights significant economic fallout stemming from the instability, particularly regarding energy security. Iran’s decision to block the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a ripple effect through the global oil and gas markets, leading the CBO to project a notable increase in inflationary pressure. Officials estimate that inflation could rise by 0.5 percentage points in the first quarter of next year, a trend that is expected to force interest rates on Treasury securities upward, placing additional strain on the broader American economy.
