Top EU Diplomat Accuses Lavrov of Spreading Falsehoods at G20 Summit
During the recent G20 foreign ministers' meeting, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, sharply criticized Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, accusing him of peddling "lies" and misleading narratives regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. Kallas emphasized that European representatives were quick to challenge these claims directly during the sessions. The friction was so pronounced that the customary group photograph of the ministers was scrapped, as several European officials refused to be pictured alongside the Russian diplomat, maintaining a firm stance against normalizing Moscow's presence on the international stage.
Kallas remained skeptical about Russia’s intentions regarding potential peace negotiations, noting a significant gap between Moscow's rhetoric and its actions on the ground. She pointed to the recent months, which have seen some of the highest civilian casualty rates in Ukraine, as proof that Russia is not genuinely interested in de-escalation. While global attention shifts toward upcoming diplomatic discussions, Kallas maintained that the international community must keep consistent pressure on the aggressor, arguing that deeds—not empty words—are the only true indicator of a willingness to pursue a lasting peace.
