Lalremsiami Hmarzote’s path to becoming an international hockey sensation began on the dirt pitches of Kolasib, where she played barefoot and had to explain the very nature of the sport to her hesitant parents. Coming from the mountainous state of Mizoram, where hockey remains a niche activity, she defied the odds by leaving home at a young age to join the Sports Authority of India’s academy. She credits her remarkable endurance to the rugged, hilly terrain of her home state, noting that the constant elevation changes built the physical stamina that eventually propelled her to become Mizoram’s first female Olympian and Asian Games medalist.
