Cyclone Arnab Strikes Southern India: Three Dead and Significant Damage Reported
A powerful storm known as Cyclone Arnab slammed into India’s southeastern coast this Wednesday, bringing destructive winds of up to 135 km/h and intense rainfall to the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. While the storm has since weakened into a deep depression, the immediate impact was severe, resulting in three confirmed fatalities and the destruction of at least 31 homes. In anticipation of the landfall, authorities took proactive measures, successfully evacuating nearly 100,000 residents across the two states to government-run shelters to ensure their safety.
In the aftermath, emergency crews have been working diligently to clear debris and fallen trees from flooded roads, while many residents are beginning to survey the damage in cities like Kakinada. Local survivors credited early government warnings for preventing a larger tragedy, noting that moving indoors helped them weather the most dangerous hours of the storm. As the system moves inland, disaster management agencies in neighboring Nepal have issued high-alert warnings, bracing for heavy snowfall and potential avalanches in the Himalayan region as the weather event progresses.
