Samsung Electronics Shifts Yongin Chip Plant Launch to 2029
In a strategic move to capitalize on the skyrocketing global demand for AI-driven memory chips, Samsung Electronics has officially announced plans to accelerate the timeline for its new semiconductor fabrication facility in Yongin. The company now aims to commence operations at this site by 2029, effectively moving the project ahead by one to two years from its initial 2030–2031 schedule.
This development aligns with broader national efforts to bolster South Korea’s semiconductor industry. Alongside competitor SK Hynix, Samsung has committed to massive domestic investments aimed at doubling the nation's memory-chip production capacity over the next five years. Supported by government initiatives designed to stimulate regional economic growth, these expanded facility projects in Yongin and Gwangju are set to play a pivotal role in maintaining South Korea's competitive edge in the global tech infrastructure race.
