UAE’s Digital Crackdown: Over 14,000 Piracy Sites Blocked During World Cup

Thu, Aug 6, 2026(2h ago)Technology

The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism recently took decisive action against digital piracy during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, utilizing its "InstaBlock" center to shut down over 14,100 illegal streaming platforms. By targeting nearly 10,000 domains and thousands of IP addresses, the initiative successfully curbed unauthorized broadcasts. Beyond the digital sphere, authorities also conducted widespread field inspections at local restaurants and cafes, penalizing nearly 300 venues for failing to utilize licensed broadcasting channels, thereby ensuring that intellectual property rights remained protected throughout the high-profile tournament.

Since its inception in early 2025, the InstaBlock system has become a powerful tool for safeguarding the sports and creative economy, having blocked over 68,000 infringing sites to date. Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini emphasized that the center’s reliance on artificial intelligence allows for rapid response times, often taking as little as 10 to 15 minutes to identify and disable a violation once reported. By fostering strong partnerships with regulatory bodies and international broadcasters, the UAE has solidified its commitment to maintaining a secure and trustworthy digital landscape for rights holders and fans alike.
