Alibaba Accelerates AI Ambitions with Massive New Models and High-Performance Chips
Alibaba Group is making aggressive moves to solidify its position in the global artificial intelligence race, recently unveiling plans to develop models up to four times larger than its current flagship, Qwen 3.8 Max. During its annual Apsara conference, the company announced that its upcoming Qwen 4 and 5 iterations are set to feature between 5 trillion and 10 trillion parameters, aimed at mastering increasingly complex tasks. Alongside these software advancements, Alibaba introduced the Zhenwu V900, a next-generation AI chip from its T-Head unit. Boasting three times the performance of its predecessor, the new processor is designed to function in massive clusters, providing a vital domestic alternative for Chinese firms facing restricted access to high-end Nvidia hardware.
The company’s bold strategy, which triggered a 5% jump in its Hong Kong-listed shares, reflects CEO Eddie Wu's vision of an AI-driven "Machine Intelligence" era comparable in scale to the Industrial Revolution. Beyond model architecture and silicon, Alibaba is doubling down on infrastructure, setting a long-term goal to expand its global data center capacity to 20 gigawatts by 2032. While supply chain constraints remain a hurdle, Wu noted that demand for these advanced technologies is significantly outpacing current availability. By focusing on everything from semiconductors to self-improving foundation models, Alibaba is clearly positioning itself to lead the next wave of technological development as it pursues the realization of artificial superintelligence.
