Revolutionary PillSense Capsule Speeds Up Internal Bleeding Diagnosis in Abu Dhabi

Tue, Jun 23, 2026(4h ago)UAE

Doctors at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi are revolutionizing emergency care for patients with suspected upper gastrointestinal bleeding by using an innovative, swallowable sensor called PillSense. When a patient presents with alarming symptoms like dizziness, low blood pressure, or passing blood, traditional diagnostic methods—such as invasive endoscopies—often require significant time and resources. PillSense bridges this gap by utilizing light absorption technology to detect the presence of blood within the stomach and small intestine, transmitting results to a wireless receiver in under 10 minutes. This rapid diagnostic capability allows medical teams to determine almost immediately whether a patient requires urgent intervention or can be safely monitored, significantly reducing the reliance on unnecessary procedures.

Developed by the Irish firm EnteraSense and cleared by the FDA, the device has already proven its worth during an SSMC pilot program, where it showed that 86 percent of assessed cases did not require immediate surgery. Dr. Mostafa Ahmed Shehata, a gastroenterology consultant at the hospital, emphasizes that while the capsule is not a replacement for professional clinical judgment or standard blood tests, it serves as an invaluable diagnostic aid that offers peace of mind to patients and efficiency to staff. By providing a clear “blood detected” or “no blood detected” result, the technology helps streamline emergency triaging, potentially sparing patients from invasive hospital procedures and allowing doctors to make faster, more informed decisions in critical situations.
