UAE Residents Near Relief: Suhail Star to Signal End of Intense Summer Heat

Sat, Aug 8, 2026(1h ago)UAE

If you have been struggling with the UAE’s relentless summer heat, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, has announced that the peak of the Al Qayz season is nearing its conclusion. While the region has seen temperatures soar past 50°C recently—reaching a blistering 51.2°C earlier this month—the rising of the Suhail star on August 24 will officially signal a transition toward more moderate weather. Known historically as the "Star of Yemen," its appearance marks the start of a 40-day period called "Sufriya," which traditionally brings a gradual decline in the extreme temperatures that define the mid-summer months.

In the meantime, the country has seen some unusual relief thanks to bouts of unstable weather. Despite the intense surface heating, which typically aids in the formation of convective clouds, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) noted that rain requires a specific mix of atmospheric moisture, instability, and favorable wind patterns. Through a combination of natural conditions and targeted cloud-seeding efforts, some residents have already enjoyed localized rainfall, offering a brief respite from the sweltering conditions. As August progresses, the expectation is that the climate will slowly begin to shift, moving away from the peak intensity of the summer season.
