FSSAI Issues Notices to Swiggy Instamart Over Safety Violations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has cracked down on Swiggy Instamart, issuing nine notices following a series of alarming consumer complaints regarding the quality of delivered goods. Customers reported receiving a range of unsafe items, including expired whey protein, rotten eggs emitting foul odors, and contaminated food products. Furthermore, the authority raised serious red flags regarding the platform's operational practices, citing instances where expired items were knowingly resupplied after being returned and noting the use of invalid or incorrect FSSAI license numbers for various listed food businesses.
In response to these findings, the FSSAI has demanded a comprehensive explanation from Swiggy Instamart regarding its seller onboarding, quality monitoring, and internal grievance redressal systems. The platform must now provide a detailed root-cause analysis and outline the specific preventive measures they are implementing to ensure food safety compliance. Should the company fail to provide a satisfactory report and demonstrate significant improvements in their inventory management and hygiene protocols, they face potential legal repercussions under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
