Kerala Investigates Deadly Wayanad Landslide After Tunnel Site Collapse

Sun, Jul 12, 2026(45d ago)World

In the wake of the devastating landslide at the Kalladi tunnel construction site in Wayanad, the Kerala government has established a five-member expert committee to conduct a thorough investigation. The disaster, which occurred on July 7, has claimed seven lives, with rescue teams recently recovering the body of a worker from the Meenakshi River. Efforts are still underway to locate the project manager, Vikram Rana, who remains the final person missing following the collapse that buried the worksite under several feet of debris.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has ordered an immediate halt to all construction activities at the location until the panel, which includes experts like Dr. C.P. Rajendran and Dr. Vishnudas, submits its findings. The investigation will focus on potential contract violations and whether the developers adhered to essential forest and environmental clearance protocols. Both state officials and local ministers have characterized the event as a "man-made" disaster, alleging that the contractors ignored repeated warnings from the District Disaster Management Authority regarding the improper disposal of excavated soil, a failure that significantly exacerbated the tragedy.
