US Tightens Visa Rules for Students, Media, and Exchange Visitors
The Trump administration has introduced new regulations that impose strict time limits on visas for international students, foreign journalists, and cultural exchange participants. Previously, these individuals were often granted legal status for the entire duration of their programs or employment. Under the new Department of Homeland Security policy, student and exchange visas will now be capped at four years, while media visas for journalists will be limited to 240 daysâor just 90 days for Chinese nationals. While these individuals can seek extensions, the move represents a significant shift toward shorter, more rigid admission periods.
The Department of Homeland Security justified these measures by citing a sharp surge in visa admissions throughout 2024, noting that monitoring such high volumes has become increasingly difficult. Officials expressed concern over instances where visa holders remained in the country for decades, prompting this policy to enhance oversight and immigration enforcement. Barring any changes during the congressional review process, the new rules are set to take effect 60 days after their publication in the federal register, marking another step in the administration's broader effort to tighten legal immigration controls.
