Tragedy Strikes as Mountaineering Legend Nirmal Purja Missing After Pakistan Avalanche

Sat, Aug 1, 2026(45d ago)World

A major search-and-rescue operation is underway on Pakistan’s Broad Peak following a devastating avalanche that has left a group of elite climbers missing. Among those caught in the disaster is the world-renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, famous for his record-breaking climbing feats and the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks. Local authorities in the Gilgit-Baltistan region confirmed that search teams have already recovered four bodies, including those of a Nepali and an Omani climber, while six other expedition members remain unaccounted for after contact was lost on Thursday.

Known to fans as "Nims Dai," Purja has spent his career pushing the boundaries of human endurance. A former member of the British Special Boat Service, he made global headlines in 2019 by summiting all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in record time and later led the first successful winter ascent of K2. Just days before the tragedy, the 43-year-old expressed his deep respect for the mountain on social media, emphasizing his quest to climb all 14 "super peaks" twice without supplemental oxygen. As rescue efforts continue, the climbing community remains in shock, hoping for news of those still stranded on the mountain.
