Gaza’s civil defense agency recently concluded a grueling 136-hour recovery operation in the Sabra neighborhood of southern Gaza City, where rescue workers uncovered the remains of 112 individuals. The tragic toll included 40 children, 38 women, and seven people with physical disabilities. Working largely by hand to sift through layers of crushed concrete and mangled metal, the teams were supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) during the two-week mission. Despite these efforts, Colonel Mohammed Abu Dan noted that an additional 157 bodies are still believed to be trapped beneath the debris, highlighting the immense challenges rescuers face in this ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The recovery mission underscores the lingering trauma for thousands of families across the territory who remain in a state of painful uncertainty while waiting to bury their loved ones with dignity. ICRC spokesperson Amani Al-Naouq emphasized that the recovery of human remains is a vital humanitarian necessity, yet the sheer scale of destruction continues to make such tasks incredibly difficult.
