The disaster, which occurred on July 26, caught many day campers off guard as water surged through the popular tourist destination. In response to the tragedy, China’s national commission for disaster prevention has officially stepped in to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, according to reports from state media outlet Xinhua.

This summer, China has faced a grueling series of extreme weather events that have left large parts of the country struggling with the aftermath of intense flooding. Beyond the tragedy in the mountainous region of Gansu, other areas have been hit equally hard; storms in Hubei claimed at least 11 lives, and a major dam breach in the Guangxi region forced the evacuation of over 130,000 residents.
