Evidence Suggests US Used Massive Bomb in Fatal Iran Strike

Mon, Aug 3, 2026(1h ago)World

A recent analysis of satellite imagery and visual evidence by The New York Times suggests that a US airstrike on Iran’s Qeshm Island resulted in the tragic deaths of a family, including a two-year-old child. The investigation indicates that a 2,000-pound Mark-84 bomb—a massive conventional weapon—was utilized in a densely populated neighborhood. While the US military claims it never targets civilians and is currently reviewing reports of the incident, the scale of the crater and debris recovered at the scene align with the use of such heavy munitions, raising serious questions regarding military protocols and the necessity of such force in a civilian area.

Experts who reviewed the visual data noted that the crater dimensions and identified weapon remnants, including parts of a guidance kit, are consistent with a bomb designed for hardened military targets like rail yards or fortified structures. Legal scholars and human rights observers have pointed out that using a weapon of this magnitude in a residential zone makes it challenging to reconcile the strike with international humanitarian obligations, which require combatants to minimize civilian harm. While the US Central Command maintains it is investigating the casualties, the strike has left a community devastated, displacing neighbors and claiming the lives of a husband, wife, and their young son.
