Delhi Braces for Massive Opposition Protest Against Election Commission
Tension is mounting in the Indian capital as security forces swarm Central Delhi ahead of a major protest march spearheaded by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Equipped with riot gear and heavy vehicles, police have cordoned off the area surrounding the route to Ramlila Maidan, where thousands are expected to gather. The demonstration, supported by a coalition of opposition parties and student groups, seeks the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters are voicing intense opposition to a recent, massive overhaul of voter rolls that saw over 130 million names removed, an action critics claim was strategically designed to disenfranchise Muslim voters and other minorities to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP.
While the Election Commission maintains that the deletions were routine—citing deaths, relocations, and untraceable individuals—the opposition remains unconvinced, pointing to internal dissent reported within the commission earlier this year. As the BJP dismisses these allegations as a coordinated attempt to undermine democratic institutions, political analysts suggest that these sustained demonstrations represent the most significant challenge to the current administration's authority since 2014. Despite the brewing unrest and the large-scale mobilization planned for Sunday, the government’s hold on power remains firm, with the next general election still years away in 2029.
