Security Incident Disrupts Flights at Leipzig-Halle Airport

Wed, Aug 5, 2026(1h ago)World

An unidentified aerial object spotted near Leipzig-Halle Airport on Tuesday night forced authorities to divert multiple flights, including a passenger plane arriving from Mallorca and several cargo jets. The incident, which occurred around 11:40 p.m., prompted an immediate security response, as officials discovered a suspicious object near the airport’s southern runway. To ensure safety, bomb disposal teams were deployed to the site, though police have since clarified that there is no ongoing threat to the general public.

While operations were temporarily suspended, the airport partially reopened during the early hours of Wednesday using only the northern runway. Investigators remain on-site at the southern runway to gather evidence and determine the nature of the object. This disruption adds to a growing trend across Germany and Europe, where unauthorized drone sightings over critical infrastructure—such as power plants and military installations—have become an increasing concern for security officials.
