Tragic Cargo Ship Attack Off Oman Coast Leaves One Indian Sailor Dead
A tragic maritime incident occurred off the coast of Oman this week when an Indian-flagged cargo vessel, the MSV Al Jusufi, was struck by an unidentified aerial object. According to Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the ship was carrying 14 Indian crew members at the time of the strike. While the Omani Coast Guard successfully rescued 13 of the sailors, one individual from Gujarat, identified as Gandhar Nahim Ajij, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
In response to the tragedy, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has officially condemned the strike, emphasizing the growing danger to commercial shipping in the region. The government is currently working closely with Omani authorities to repatriate the surviving crew and bring the deceased seafarer’s remains home. Highlighting the broader instability in the area, officials have called for an urgent de-escalation of tensions and a return to diplomatic dialogue to ensure that international waterways remain safe for civilian and commercial transit, particularly given India's significant contribution to the global merchant seafaring workforce.
