Pilgrims Gather on Mount Arafat as Hajj Reaches its Climax

Tue, May 26, 2026(45d ago)World

As the annual Hajj pilgrimage approaches its final stages, over 1.5 million worshippers have gathered on the rocky slopes of Mount Arafat to offer prayers under a relentless desert sun. Temperatures in the region have soared toward 40ºC, creating a challenging environment for the faithful who donned white garments to recite verses at the site where Prophet Mohammed is believed to have delivered his final sermon. Despite the regional geopolitical instability, the massive turnout underscores the deep spiritual significance of this journey, which remains a mandatory pillar of faith for every physically and financially capable Muslim.

To cope with the extreme heat, Saudi authorities have been proactive in issuing health warnings, advising participants to stay hydrated and seek shade whenever possible. Because traditional head coverings are restricted for men, many pilgrims have turned to umbrellas as a primary defense against the blistering conditions. Following the day of reflection at Arafat, the pilgrims are scheduled to move toward Muzdalifah to gather pebbles for the upcoming symbolic "stoning of the devil" ritual in Mina, continuing a tradition that dates back more than 1,400 years.
