Tragedy Strikes Kenyan Girls' Boarding School as Fire Claims 16 Lives
A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday at the Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County, Kenya, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. The blaze, which began around 1 a.m. in a dormitory housing approximately 220 students, also left 73 others hospitalized with injuries. Emergency crews and the Kenyan Red Cross were immediately dispatched to the scene, located about 120 kilometers north of Nairobi, as distraught families gathered outside the school grounds awaiting news of their children.
This heart-wrenching incident adds to a troubling history of school fires in Kenya, a nation where the boarding school system remains a prominent legacy of the colonial era. With previous tragedies, such as the 2024 blaze at Hillside Endarasha Academy that claimed 21 lives, authorities have frequently grappled with issues ranging from arson and academic pressure to lax safety standards. Despite government pledges to conduct safety audits and implement stricter regulations, the recurrence of these deadly fires remains a critical concern for the country's education sector.
