Inflation Turns Eid Grave Visits into a Costly Burden in Rawalpindi
In Rawalpindi, the traditional practice of visiting cemeteries during Eid has become an increasingly stressful financial burden for families. As inflation continues to grip the country, the prices for essential items like flower petals, incense sticks, and rose water have soared, with some floral sheets now costing as much as Rs1,400. Beyond the rising cost of offerings, residents are also facing higher service fees from caretakers for basic grave maintenance, making what should be a solemn and affordable tribute to deceased loved ones feel like a luxury many can no longer easily afford.
Compounding the frustration is a growing sense of neglect regarding the physical state of the city's 55 graveyards. Many citizens have expressed anger over overgrown bushes and dense, tall vegetation—including wild cannabis—that have made it difficult for families to even navigate the grounds. While residents continue to shell out money to honor their traditions, they are calling on local authorities to stop ignoring these sacred spaces and take responsibility for the deteriorating maintenance that has left many burial sites in a state of disrepair.
