GCC Tech Landscape Booms as Unicorn Count Hits Nine
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is rapidly cementing its status as a global innovation powerhouse, with the number of unicorns—privately held startups valued at over $1 billion—rising to nine this year. According to the latest Hurun Global Unicorn Index, these companies now hold a collective valuation of $45 billion. The UAE remains the dominant force in the region with seven unicorns, while Saudi Arabia has successfully added two, reflecting a broader regional trend of aggressive economic diversification and a maturing venture capital ecosystem.
Leading the charge is the UAE-based messaging giant Telegram, which alone accounts for a significant $30 billion of the regional valuation. Beyond digital communications, the region is seeing a diverse spread of billion-dollar success stories, including Saudi fintech leaders Tabby and Tamara, alongside UAE-based innovators like cloud kitchen operator Kitopi and AI.Tech. Furthermore, the UAE has gained global recognition for its media and entertainment sector, ranking only behind the US, China, and the UK in terms of unicorn count within that specific industry. This growth underscores the success of initiatives like Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the UAE's ongoing efforts to attract international talent and capital.
