UAE Bolsters Global Diamond Trade by Linking African Producers with Asian Markets
The United Arab Emirates is positioning itself as a pivotal bridge in the global diamond industry, focusing on enhancing trade connectivity between resource-rich African nations and major manufacturing hubs in India and broader Asia. Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri emphasized at the recent Dubai Diamond Conference that this strategic alignment is designed to do more than just facilitate trade; it aims to foster sustainable economic growth. By providing African producers with better access to capital, technical expertise, and investment, the UAE hopes to empower these nations to retain a greater portion of the value chain within their own borders.
Dubaiâs influence in this sector has seen remarkable growth, with trade volumes surging by 139% since 2020 and hitting a record $41.7 billion recently. While the market for natural diamonds remains dominant, the UAE is evolving its infrastructure to include polished diamond trading and cutting-edge tender facilities through the Dubai Diamond Exchange. Furthermore, the DMCC is solidifying these international ties through strategic partnerships, such as the new collaboration with the Botswana Stock Exchange and the London Diamond Bourse. These initiatives are effectively transforming Dubai into an indispensable hub that links the origin of the worldâs most precious stones to the growing demand in global consumer markets.
