Apple CEO Warns of Impending Price Hikes Due to AI Memory Chip Crunch

Thu, Jun 18, 2026(45d ago)Technology

Apple CEO Tim Cook has signaled that customers should prepare for rising hardware costs as the industry grapples with an unprecedented surge in memory chip prices. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook explained that while the company has long absorbed these costs to protect its user base, the current market climate has made that strategy unsustainable. Driven by the explosive growth of artificial intelligence and the massive infrastructure required to support data centers, the global supply of RAM and memory components has tightened significantly, leading to quarterly price spikes that Cook described as a "hundred-year flood."

While specific details regarding which products will see price tags climb remain unclear, experts suggest the financial impact could be substantial. Research firm TechInsights estimates that maintaining current profit margins on premium devices like the iPhone Pro might require a price jump of approximately $270. With supply chain constraints showing no signs of easing, Cook admitted that passing these costs onto the consumer has become an unavoidable reality, marking a challenging shift for a company known for its price stability in the face of fluctuating component costs.
